Ammonia poisoning

Ammonia is a highly water-soluble, colorless, alkaline irritant gas that strongly irritates the eyes and mucous membranes. It can be used in the manufacture of fertilizers and refrigerants, as well as in the production of explosives, dyes, plastics and some drugs. The strong irritation prompts people to leave quickly, thereby avoiding severe lung injury. Lung damage caused by ammonia release from household cleaners is rare.
