Submandibular space infection

Infection of the submandibular space is mostly secondary to inflammation of oral tissues. The pathogenic bacteria are mainly hemolytic streptococcus and staphylococcus aureus. Early clinical manifestations include local pain in the oral tissue, swelling at the bottom of the mouth, and progressive dysplasia. The infection spreads along the fascia to the neck, which can cause serious complications such as mediastinal infection and laryngeal obstruction. Treatment requires the application of a sufficient amount of effective antibiotics, early reduction of tension and adequate drainage.
