Tracheal aspiration

Tracheal aspiration is the extraction of secretions and cells from the trachea and main bronchi. Tracheal aspiration is most commonly used in patients who cannot cough up excessive secretions in the airways. Due to its simple operation, it is most commonly used for tracheal intubation or tracheotomy. However, it can also be suctioned through the nasal passages or mouth; transtracheal procedures are rarely used.
