Cerebrospinal fluid free myelin basic protein
MBP is synthesized in oligodendrocytes. It is composed of 170 amino acid residues, has a molecular weight of 18,000, and is rich in lipids. Protein content is about 30%. MBP is a component of neural tissue. After the nerve tissue is damaged, CSF is released within a few days, so the increase in MBP concentration in CSF can reflect the destruction of nerve myelin sheath integrity.
