The condition varies, and severe cases can cause death from sepsis, shock, multiple organ failure, and Reye syndrome. The new "People's Republic of China's Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Law", which came into effect on December 1, 2004, has included human infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza as a Class B infectious disease for management, and provides for treatment according to preventive measures for Class A infectious diseases . Avian influenza virus infection can be manifested as mild respiratory symptoms, digestive symptoms, and low mortality; or as more severe systemic, hemorrhagic, and septic symptoms with higher mortality.
