Pediatric Keshan disease

Keshan disease is an endemic cardiomyopathy of myocardial injury with unknown etiology in China. It was first discovered in Keshan County, Heilongjiang Province in 1935, so it is called Keshan disease. It is prevalent in parts of Northeast, Southwest, and Central South China, and its main clinical manifestations are acute or chronic heart failure, accompanied by various arrhythmias. Keshan disease is more common in preschool children, has an acute onset, and has a very high mortality rate. The cause may be related to malnutrition, lack of trace elements such as selenium, viral infection, and mycotoxin poisoning.
