Pelvic floor electromyogram

Pelvic floor electromyography is an examination method used to determine the location and scope of sphincter defects. The pelvic floor striated muscle is anatomically and physiologically different from the striated muscle in other parts of the body. It contains more type I fibers (tension fibers), especially the external sphincter and puborectalis. Because of its small size, the action potentials produced by its individual muscle fibers and motor units are relatively small. These muscles are always in a state of constant tension and contraction, generating a certain amount of electrical activity, even during sleep. During defecation, muscles relax and electrical activity decreases or disappears. The pelvic floor electromyogram is to understand the functional status and innervation of the pelvic floor muscles by recording the changes in electrical activity of the pelvic floor muscles in the resting and defecation states.
