Serum complement C4

C4 is one of the 11 complement components in the blood. C4 is a beta globulin that is synthesized in liver, lymphoid tissue, bone marrow, peritoneal macrophages, monocytes and other tissues. C4 is involved in the classical activation pathway of complement. Determination of C4 content is helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
