Ectopic calcification

Pathological terms. Also known as heterotopic ossification. In addition to normal physiological calcification, calcium salt deposition occurs outside of skeletal tissue. This change usually occurs in the tendon attachment, ligaments, blood vessel walls, bone fascia, etc. of the bone. The precipitation of calcium ions from the skeletal system often leads to the occurrence of osteoporosis, so some scholars advocate ectopic calcification as an indirect sign of osteoporosis.
