Urinary β2 microglobulin clearance

Urine β2 microglobulin clearance is an auxiliary test method used to determine whether the glomerular function is normal. β2-microglobulin is produced in lymphocytes and has a small amount in urine. Because of its small molecular weight, it can pass freely through the glomerular filtration membrane. The increase of β2-microglobulin in urine should be considered whether the synthesis is increased or the recursive tubule reabsorption is reduced. If there is no disease that causes an increase in synthesis, its increase may reflect a decrease in proximal renal tubular reabsorption function. Acute tubular injury or necrosis, chronic interstitial nephritis, and chronic renal failure can significantly increase urine β2-microglobulin.
