Crystals of potassium permanganate on the skin or mucous membranes

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidant. It has a disinfecting and astringent effect at low concentrations, and a stimulating and corrosive effect at high concentrations. Pediatric poisoning is often caused by eating its crystals as sugar or drinking its solution by accident; occasionally, high-concentration solution is used to lavage the stomach when it is rescued from poisoning, which causes potassium permanganate crystals to adhere to the skin.
