Corneal squamous cell carcinoma

Corneal squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor derived from the corneal epithelium. The cause is unknown. It can originate from healthy corneal epithelium, or it can be caused by corneal intraepithelial carcinoma (carcinoma in situ) breaking through the epithelial basement membrane and invading deep cornea. The disease develops slowly, grows only locally for a long time, has low malignancy, rarely metastasizes to adjacent lymph nodes, and distant metastases are even fewer.
