Neonatal vomiting and blood in the stool

Hematemesis and hematochezia are common symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding in newborns. Generally, gastrointestinal bleeding above the levator duodenum (also known as Treitz ligament) is called upper gastrointestinal bleeding, which is mainly vomiting; and lower gastrointestinal bleeding is mainly blood. When the amount of lower gastrointestinal bleeding is greater, or the pressure in the intestine is higher than the pressure in the stomach, bloody fluid can flow back into the stomach and esophagus, and can also cause vomiting. Conversely, when the amount of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract exceeds 3ml, melena can also occur . That is, there is no vomiting when melena, and vomiting often has melena.
