Papillary Muscle Dysfunction and Rupture in the Elderly

Papillary muscle insufficiency refers to the clinical symptoms of mitral regurgitation caused by papillary muscle lesions that cause contractile dysfunction or changes in the orientation of the papillary muscles that cannot maintain the normal closed state of the mitral valve. Clinically referred to as papillary muscle dysfunction refers to left ventricular papillary muscle disease. Because the papillary muscles contract and pull the valve to do the most work, but because it is in the innermost layer of the ventricle, blood is supplied from the terminal part of the coronary arteries. When the coronary blood supply is reduced, the papillary muscle ischemia and necrosis are most likely to occur.
