Urine iodine

Normal adults contain 20-50 micrograms of iodine. Iodine can be taken into the body along with food, drinking water, salt, etc. 70% to 80% of the iodine mainly absorbed from the intestine is concentrated in the thyroid, which is mainly excreted through the urine. Iodine is an element that makes up thyroxine. It exerts biochemical effects through thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Iodine deficiency disorders include endemic goiter and endemic cretinism. However, excessive intake of iodine can also cause disease, such as hyperiodine endemic goiter. The detection of urinary iodine is an important and simple indicator for iodine deficiency.
