Hyperkalemia in the elderly

Hyperkalemia refers to serum potassium of 5.5 mmol / L. Total body potassium does not necessarily increase during hyperkalemia, but intracellular and extracellular potassium distribution is not normal. Unless the kidneys are diseased, kidney function does not decrease in the elderly; therefore, hypokalemia is less common.
